    Question:
You are a consultant hired by Giant TMC Berhad. Using The PESTLE framework,
briefly discuss and justify the three (3) most relevant macro environmental factors
AND two (2) issues under each factor that would impact Giant’s success in the
Australian Supermarket and Grocery Stores industry over the next 10 years. Do you
think there is a worthwhile opportunity for Giant to enter the Australian market?
The Malaysia Giant is eyeing the Australian market
The Supermarket and Grocery Stores industry is one of the most fiercely
competitive in Australia (IBIS 2016). In the past two decades, the industry has
attracted new foreign supermarket retailers such as Costco and Aldi. The
entry and rapid growth of Aldi, which almost exclusively sells private-label
products at discounted prices, has caused a massive shift in the industry (IBIS
2016) . Aldi has forced the two established industry giants (Woolworths and
Coles) to change their business models by focusing on cheaper products to
cut prices and expand their own range of private-label products. Aldi is now
the third-biggest Australian supermarket chain with 11 per cent compared to
Woolworths’ 39 per cent and Coles has 33.5 per cent. Industry revenue has
    now reached $88.1 billion/annum (IBIS 2016; Passport GMID 2016).

In the past year, there has also been talk of Lidl’s (owned by the German-
based Schwartz Group) interest in the Australian Supermarket and Grocery
Stores industry (Low 2015). According to Deloitte (2015), Lidl is the fourth
largest retailer globally with a staggering $128 billion in annual sales. Its entry
would significantly change the competitive landscape in Australia.
Given the growth of Aldi and Lidl’s impending entry, Malaysian hyper-market
retail chain Giant TMC Berhad is now also eyeing the Australian market. You
have been hired to help them to evaluate opportunities in the Australian
Supermarket and Grocery Stores industry. Giant is a major player in the retail
industry in Malaysia, and also has operations in Singapore, Brunei Indonesia,
    Vietnam, UAE, and China (http://www.giant.com.my/about-us.aspx).
