Research Paper
Research topic and research question
Students are required to propose their own research topic and clearly identify the main research question, and email their proposal to Unit Coordinator, Dr Jadranka Petrovic (Jadranka.Petrovic@monash.edu) by
Saturday, 6 August, 5:00pm.
Students can propose any research topic related to contracts for the international sale of goods (covered by weeks 1-3).
Topics will be approved, or requested to be modified, by Unit Coordinator, by
Monday, 8 August 2016, 5:00pm.
General instructions
You are expected to conduct research around the contracts for the international sale of goods, on your own proposed topic, approved by Unit Coordinator. In your research you will rely on both primary sources (eg, legal instruments and case law) and secondary sources (eg, reports and scholarly writing (eg, books and journal article). Your research will have to be up-to-date and fully referenced (please see below).
Your paper must be accompanied by bibliography. Your bibliography should start on a separate page. Each bibliography entry must conform to the rules in the
Australian Guide to Legal Citations (AGLC). Copy of the AGLC is available on the unit’s Moodle site.

Important information regarding the assessment criteria
This assessment task is individual work. However, subject to Unit Coordinator’s approval, students can work on this assessment task in groups of two or more, in which case the word limit will increase (and will be determined by Unit Coordinator).
The task is designed to test your knowledge and understanding of the relevant law and to assess your ability to research the topic area, identify various issues emanating from your research, and to critically evaluate research findings. Your ability to communicate clearly, articulate arguments with support from your research and draw conclusions appropriate to your discussion will also be taken into account.
Please ensure that your response is written in proper paragraphs, uses full sentences and that your work is referenced, proof-read and spell-checked before submission. Good use of paragraph conventions, clear writing, correct spelling and grammar, as well as correct citation of the relevant case law, applicable legal instruments and other sources, will be rewarded.
The following criteria will be evaluated as ‘excellent’, ‘very good’, ‘good’, ‘requires work’ and ‘warrants significant improvement’:
· Identifying and understanding the issues;
· Presenting arguments and counterarguments in a logical and coherent manner;
· Supporting arguments by authorities;
· Evidence of research undertaken;
· Thinking critically;
· Reasoning logically;
· Proper referencing;
· Expression and presentation.

This assessment task carries 15% of your final mark for the unit. In other words, the task will be marked out of 15.

Students are required to submit their paper via the submission link on the unit’s Moodle site (which can be found in the section ‘In-semester assessment, Assessment Task Three’).

Formatting instructions
The following rules should be observed:
· Font: 12 pt, Times New Roman ;
· Spacing: double;
· Margins: 3.5 cm on both sides of the page.
Do not forget the coversheet
The cover page (which can be found at the end of this document) must be completed and submitted together with your research paper as one file.
Referencing and presentation requirements
Work submitted for this assessment must follow footnoting referencing style and strictly adhere to the rules in the AGLC.
Word limit
Your research paper should be
between 1,500 and 2,000 words, excluding footnotes, bibliography, title, headings and subheadings. Research papers done by groups will have the word limit determined by Unit Coordinator.
Please note that no penalty will be applied if you exceed the word limit, provided that you do not exceed the word limit dramatically.
Estimated return date
Efforts will be made to return your research papers in week eight.
Plagiarism & Collusion
Your research paper must be your own independent work. Please note the warning regarding plagiarism and collusion set out on the assignment cover page. Please consult the Unit Guide for further information on plagiarism and collusion.
Note:
· Every paper will be checked on plagiarism by utilising the relevant plagiarism detection software.
· Rigorous checks will be employed to determine whether papers were produced in whole or in part by someone else.
Penalty for late submission of research papers
A research paper submitted after the due date, or the expiry of an extension period, will be penalised by one mark per day or part day that the submission is late. A paper that is submitted more than 59 minutes after the due date and time on the day the assessment is due will have two marks deducted. A paper submitted a day after the day the assessment is due will have four marks deducted.
Please note that this policy is applied consistently across all BLT units to ensure that students submitting late do not gain any unfair advantage over those students submitting on time.
Students are not permitted to submit this piece of assessment after 4 September 2016. In this event, a mark of 0 will be recorded for this component of assessment.
Extensions
1. All applications for an extension of time must be made by completing the application form found at URL <http://www.buseco.buseco.monash.edu.au/student/exams/speccon.html>.
2. Forms must be submitted to Unit Coordinator.
3. Extensions will only be granted for a VERY good reason. Students should commence work on the research paper in semester week one.
4. Extensions will not be granted on grounds of extra work or study commitments, even if those commitments occur in the week prior to the paper being due.
5. Extensions on the grounds of illness must be accompanied by a medical certificate that states that the student was unable to undertake any work for a period of at least 7 days within the assessment period.
Make an electronic copy of the cover sheet and paste it into your assignment. The cover sheet does not need to be signed if you submit it via your official Monash email address.

Collaboration involves working with another person or persons, and in order to prevent any unfair advantage is only allowed where the relevant lecturer has specifically permitted it. Plagiarism is a form of cheating, and involves the presentation of some or all of another student’s work, or material from any other source such as the Internet, published books, or periodicals, without due acknowledgment given in the text. Where work submitted for assessment by two or more persons is the same or substantially the same, the work so submitted is prima facie evidence of cheating by those persons. It may also be that one student has assisted another to cheat, which is also an offence. Where there are reasonable grounds for believing that cheating or assisting to cheat has occurred, the only action that may be taken is for the staff member to disallow the work and not give it an assessment, or to refer the matter to the Group Manager, Academic and HR Services. The matter will then be referred to the Faculty Discipline Committee. This Committee has the power to suspend or exclude a student.
