MGMT 5802 Competitive Advantage through People
    Assignment 2 Guidelines & FAQ’s
This assessment requires you to consider an organisational case study and apply the
concepts you are learning to the specifics of the situation. The purpose of this assignment
is to provide you with opportunities to anchor the course material in an actual
organisational context. You will be able to choose from the cases available on the
Course Website, or you may choose to examine your current workplace, a company with
which you are familiar, or that you would like to work in on graduation. (If you choose
the latter option you will need to email your facilitator for advance approval.) This is an
    individual assessment task.
This task requires you to analyse the case study organisation using at least three concepts
covered in the course over Weeks 1-4. You are free to choose the concepts that you feel
are most relevant, but you must choose at least three and they must be related to
Weeks 1-4 of CAtP (not other courses).
For example, you may choose to apply the concepts of intrinsic motivators (W4),
organisational enablers (W3) and your understanding of the global business context
(W1) in your analysis. These are suggestions only.
You need to demonstrate that you have read and understood the relevant concepts. You
should attempt to briefly summarise the relevant ideas and arguments expressed in the
lectures and/or readings and apply them to the case. A simple summary of the key points
is not sufficient, but you will need to be succinct and discerning about what you include.
Your analysis should be 1000 words in length (+-10%), single or 1.5 spaced with
a margin of at least 2.5 cm and font size no smaller than 11 point. All assignments need a
    School Cover Sheet attached.
A suggested structure is as follows:
1-2 paragraphs maximum – Introduction, brief description of the organisation
(e.g. size, location, core business, mission/strategic focus etc) and the 3 concepts
    you will be applying
1-2 paragraphs – Concept 1 brief description and application to case
    MGMT 5802 Assignment
1-2 paragraphs – Concept 2 brief description and application to case
1-2 paragraphs – Concept 3 brief description and application to case
    1 paragraph - Conclusion
Any ideas that are not your own must be referenced using the Harvard system (see EDU
or Learning Centre Guides for more details).

    Some related FAQ’s:
    1) Can we write about an organisation where we have worked? Does it need to be a
forprofit company. My work experience is in schools, for example.
Yes, I would encourage you to use an organisation where you have worked, as it would
be so much more meaningful for you! Any type of organisation, as long as it has people
    in it, is fine.
    2) Do we need to quote references about the company facts that we have stated in our
    assignment?
If you have a source of the data, then yes – but ‘Company X Website’, or ‘Company X
Annual Report 2016’ will be fine.
    3) Do we need to quote references around the current news or the impacts of global
    crises?
It depends whether you are talking facts or impressions. For facts – yes; for impressions
(eg ‘the GFC has led to many questions’… ) then – no.
    4) With respect to the 3 concepts, is it enough to demonstrate the related events and
impacts from our perception, or do we need data to back up the application of those
    theories in our work places.
Your perception is fine. You would not have had time to conduct primary research.
    5) Should I cite author's names in my writing even they are basically from the materials in
the lecture? They are not my ideas but things I learned in the class. For instance, when I
demonstrate Kay’s framework, do I have to cite its reference?
You can simply put your citation as: Anderson J. 2016, ‘Week 3 Lecture material’. (But
please note, this advice is for CAtP only, be careful in other courses!)
    6) It says in the assignment brief that we need to describe each concept. So, is a brief
sentence enough? Or is simply enough to name the concept and through the analysis
and link to the concepts that I understand?
You should describe the concept in sufficient detail (and in your own words) for the
marker to see that you understand it. As noted in the Assignment brief, you should aim
for around 300 words (1-2 paras) on each concept AND its application to the
organisation being considered. So around 100 words, as a ROUGH guide, would be
used to describe/ explain the concept chosen.
    7) Can I attach a brief appendix with a short background to what the company is and what
    they do?
Yes, as long as it is no more than half a page.
    8) It is supposed to be written academically and in 3rd person?
    Yes.
